Suspect arrested in JMPD officer killing

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of metro police officer Simon Mabatamela.

JOHANNESBURG – According to a report by News24, the man was arrested in Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon, metro police said.

Mabatamela, 60, was at the Centro Shopping Centre when he intervened in a robbery.

“Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers have arrested a 41-year-old man in Yeoville today [Wednesday] in connection with the murder of Mabatamela, who was shot dead during a robbery in Rosettenville on Monday, July 23,” Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar was quoted by News24.

“Officers received a tip-off that the man was at a house in Alexandra Street, Yeoville, where he was arrested at about 15:00 on Wednesday, August 12.”

A report stated, “The man is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court soon, Minnaar said.”

Mabatamela was on his way to withdraw cash at an ATM near the store just before 15:00 when the incident occurred.

“When the officer fell, he was shot twice in the upper body and died on the scene.”

The robbers fled the scene with the cashbox, but the money was covered in anti-theft dye, said Minnaar.
