Last respects for patrol officer

Police officers murders worry the community of the South.

LA ROCHELLE – The community of the South came together to pay their last respects to a patrol officer from The Hill, Anthony Bester, who served his community with pride and dignity and died fighting the sickness that is crime.

Anthony and the owner of TPS Security, Alan Oberholzer, died during a shoot-out in The Hill on Thursday, July 23. A large crowd showed up at his memorial service at St Patricks Church in La Rochelle’s Firth Street.

Acting PRO of Moffatview CPF, Phillip Venter, extended his condolences and said: “The criminals in Johannesburg must be brought to book and we call on the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) to apprehend these criminals and do all in their power to ensure that communities live in safety.”

Anthony’s memorial service was held at the same time JMPD visited the Rosettenville Junction to honour a JMPD officer, Simon Mabatamela, who was also shot and killed by criminals in ward 57.

The JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, said: “People need to be vigilant as the criminals hang around almost everywhere.” He added that it saddens everyone when people willing to fight for the community die at the hands of perpetrators housed in the very same community.
