Elderly man takes action

76-year-old Neville said people look at him as if he is crazy when he resurfaces pavements from the overgrown grass.

AN elderly man from Chrisville, Neville Swinburne, has taken service delivery into his own hands to ensure children of the community can walk safely on the pavements.

Neville said he was looking at school children walking on the roads and streets, on their way home from school and noticed that they did so in order to avoid walking on the uncut grass covering the pavements.

DA ward 56 councillor Rashieda Landis was impressed to see how 76-year-old Nevilled cut and cleared the long grass from the pavement.

According to Clr Rashieda, children are not safe when they are forced to walk on the roads. “Many motorists are reckless and drive very fast on these roads in the morning and the afternoon, and those are the times when the children are either going to school or coming back,” she said.

“Some people looked at me like I am crazy when I was busy working here in the streets. But for me, this is to keep our children safe. In fact, I found three water meters which could no longer be spotted underneath all that growth,” said Neville.

Booysens Sector Three CPF member, Riaz Tobin, also expressed his appreciation for what Neville is doing for the children. Neville’s actions were also an inspiration to others who joined in and cleaned up other sections on Monday, July 28.

“I want to thank Neville and other community members who are cleaning other parts, as this makes it safe for children. City Parks and JRA must take notice.” said a proud Rashieda.
