Caxton team rescues child and nanny from fire

Caxton's distribution team dropped piles of newspapers to the floor to save a child and a nanny after an air conditioner exploded.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Not only did swift action from the Caxton distribution team save the life of a child and nanny in Ormonde on Tuesday, June 9, but they also prevented a parked vehicle from going up in flames.

While doing deliveries, members of the team, headed by Arron Mbele, dropped bundles of the Southern COURIER newspapers and ran to put out a fire in double story building at about 07:45.

Acting on instinct, the team quickly sprang into action and connected hosepipes in order to combat the blaze. They also borrowed a ladder from a neighbour, Noeleen Burley.

Arron said his biggest worry was to stop the fire before it spread to the vehicle as that would cause an explosion. It is believed that the fire was caused by the explosion of an air conditioner.

“These Caxton guys were amazing. They quickly dropped the papers, borrowed my ladder and jumped into the premises to put out the fires,” said Noeleen.

Noeleen was alerted by her little puppy who would not stop barking. When she went to investigate why her puppy was upset, she noticed the fire and phoned for help. “Fortunately the Caxton team was right there and they assisted immediately, without thinking twice,” she said

“It makes me very proud to know that our distribution team is this dedicated to the communities they serve, that they would go beyond their call of duty to assist someone in need. Well done and thank you.” said a proud Christiaan Welthagen, Caxton South branch manager.
