JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – “HOW you answer the telephone could help save you from criminals entering the property and breaking in.”
These are the words of Martin Barber from SOS Protec Sure, who addressed domestics and gardeners at the Domestic Watch meeting, on Tuesday, June 9, at the Sasol garage, Suideroord.
“Answer the phone with authority and never say you are at home alone. Ask if you can help the caller and ask for his name and number, telling him your employee will get back to him,” advised Martin. The lesson served as a reminder to take care while looking after the home of the employer.
“Make sure you have your employer’s phone number and, if someone stands by the gate and says ‘your boss says you must let me in’, refuse and phone your employer immediately. Don’t let anyone onto the property. Recently there have been criminals in the area trying to gain access to properties,” said Martin.
A member of Mondeor SAPS, Sergeant Shirley Gqoba, also attended the meeting and gave advice to the domestic workers on how to stay safe while working in the home. “Make sure you have the local police station number, security company and any other important numbers you may need, next to the telephone in case of an emergency.”
