JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Regardless of your habits or challenges, you are welcome to join Narcotic Anonymous (NA) meetings free of charge. What started out small in the 1980’s has now grown to over 303 weekly meetings across South Africa.

What to expect if you are new to NA?

The success of NA is the fact that you have recovering addicts working with one another. Members share their successes and challenges in overcoming active addiction and living drug free, productive lives. NA offers a program which guides addicts through 12 steps and 12 traditions. As many as 61 000 weekly meetings are held in 129 countries across world. This programme offers a sustainable solution to recovery.

How do the meetings work?

If you’re an addict or think you might have a drug problem, it is suggested that you join a meeting every day for at least 90 days to get to know the NA program. In your first meeting, you will be introduced and welcomed as a new member and you will get information pamphlets.

Newcomers are welcomed with a handshake and a welcome key tag. In most places, members gather in a circle to end the meeting with a short prayer or NA reading.

Some people come to NA meetings while still using drugs and the journey of recovery begins with abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol.

NA Background

Narcotics Anonymous is a non-religious program of recovery; each member is introduced to some spiritual principles and apply these principles to everyday life. It is also not affiliated with other organisations. NA does not employ professional counsellors or therapists, nor does it provide residential facilities or clinics. Additionally, the fellowship does not offer vocational, legal, financial, psychiatric, or medical services. Meetings are often held in churches, or centres, because these places tend to be affordable and available.

NA’s primary purpose is providing a recovery environment in their meetings, whereby drug addicts can share their recovery experiences with one another.
