Girl (9) mauled by three pit-bulls

He said people watched helplessly as they were scared to help, however, one brave man, Mkhululi Nsibande, who is his neighbour, jumped the fence and helped the little girl.

A GRADE four learner from WH Coetzer Primary School, The Hill was mauled by three pit-bulls when she returned home from school on Monday May 25.

Her father, Vusi Khumalo related the story to the COURIER. He said they are tenants at the house in Lang Street, Rosettenville. “When my daughter came home, she opened the gate and then locked it. That’s when the dogs attacked her. My daughter is in theatre, her leg is about to be amputated and I’m being told her kidneys are failing,” he said.

He said people watched helplessly as they were scared to help, however, one brave man, Mkhululi Nsibande, who is his neighbour, jumped the fence and helped the little girl.

When the COURIER contacted Mkhululi, he said, “I couldn’t stand there and watch her being attacked by these dogs. While outside I spotted a police van, I asked them to help. They were scared to go into the property. I took a branch of a tree and a hammer, jumped the fence and rescued the girl.”

The landlord, Patricia Kabongo said she is baffled as to how and who let the dogs out as they are always locked in a garage. “I wasn’t home most of the day as I was at the clinic. My dogs are always locked in the garage. Someone must have opened the garage door. I have many tenants and no one is prepared to tell me the truth,” she explained.

On Wednesday May 27, Vusi went to Moffatview Police Station to open a case of negligence (he was advised by the Animal Anti-Cruely League), however he was surprised when the officer who helped refused to open the case citing that, “he was not at the scene when the incident took place.” Constable Rebecca Bila was contacted by the COURIER and she took the details of Vusi and said she will look at the matter.

Meanwhile the little girl lies in Chis Hani Baragwanath Hospital fighting for her life.
