Green fingers give life to a veggie garden

A celebration of Global Food Security was held at Mondeor Primary School during a visit by the Generation Earth council

IT was time for green celebrations at Mondeor Primary School during the month of May, when a vegetable garden was planted.

The veggie garden is an initiative driven by Global Food Security. Also present was the Generation Earth council and the event was made possible through efforts of sponsors Turfnet, Gebco and community member Mr Daya Kandasamy, who donated soil and a range of different discarded tyres. Glenanda Primary School and the council of University of Witwatersrand (WITS) were also present.

This youth driven activity was a success through the efforts and support of dedicated, passionate and enthusiastic teachers such as Ms Anna Stella Papageorgiou and Mrs Sharon Loots. They are credited by Generation Earth with facilitating the green movement at the school. Mrs Gaylin Bowels, the principal of the school, expressed her support and encouragement for this youth organisation.

“Through hands-on activities, like vegetable gardens, regular litter clean ups, up-cycling activities and motivational talks, this council is active and growing with every group activation at their school or in their community,” said founder of Generation Earth, United Nations Youth Ambassador, Miss Earth SA Educational Officer and project coordinator, Ella Bella Constantinides.

South resident Mr Rob Winter, together with Georgina Cost from Generation Earth, spoke to the children about winter vegetables and what can and should be planted at this time of the year.

“Food security is when all people, at all times, have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food, to meet their dietary needs for an active and healthy life. And by starting the discussion at an early age we are able to make communities more self-sufficient.” said Ella Bella.
