Point of correction about old age homes

Attached is the written response by the Housing MMC, Dan Bovu, as supporting evidence.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – DA’s ward 142 PR councillor, Tyrell Meyers, wants to set the record straight regarding the exact amount of money the City of Johannesburg has allocated for old age homes.

Meyers told the COURIER: “Clr Sidney Radebe claimed that the MMC for Housing has put aside a total amount of R100- million for the maintenance of all old age homes in the City of Johannesburg.

”However, on Thursday, February 26, the MMC for Housing, Dan Bovu, responded to my written question to council: (WQHSG113, for your reference), with a rather vague answer on the allocation of funds for these two specific old age homes, Reuven and Glenesk.

“A total of R37-m is the answer, in a written response from the MMC for Housing, that has been set aside for repairs and maintenance for all city housing stock, which includes Reuven and Glenesk, for the 2014/2015 financial year.

“I would love to know how the councillor (Radebe) comes to the figure of R100-m? Where is the other R63-m coming from, or are financial irregularities taking place in the city?

”With this kind of poor allocation it is no wonder that the grass is not cut regularly. The Glenesk Old Age Home is in an even worse state. If this is not neglecting the seniors, then what is? Seniors should be worried.”

The ward councillor, Sidney Radebe, responded to acknowledge and thank Meyers for the point of correction.

His reply read: “Thanks to the councillor for the correction of the amount allocated by the MMC for Housing for the maintenance of all old age homes in the City of Johannesburg.

”I would like to take this opportunity to actually applaud the councillor for acknowledging, for the first time, that the City of Johannesburg, led by the African National Congress, is doing something to address the plight of our senior citizens, by allocating funds.”
