Children under siege from speeding motorists

School children are not safe on the roads because of motorists who disregard speed laws in residential areas.

CHILDREN being knocked over by vehicles after school is a growing concern for residents in the South.

Learners from schools, including Frances Vorweg, Glenanda Primary and more recently Mondeor High School, have been victims of speeding vehicles.

These schools have tried and failed to get Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and the JMPD to ensure child road safety.

A Grade Nine Mondeor High School pupil was rushed to Mulbarton Hospital on May 8, after he was knocked over in Ormonde Drive, Mondeor, by a taxi transporting small children.

An eye witness said the pupil ran into the street while a speeding taxi was passing. The boy sustained serious injuries to the head.

Mrs Vangelia Nicolaou, Mondeor High School principal, is shocked and extremely concerned about the wellbeing and safety of her pupils.

Ward 54 Clr Sergio Dos Santos said: “I’m trying to push for Ormonde Drive, Radbourne Road and Beauval Street in Mondeor to be a one-way and work in circular motion in the mornings so traffic can only come in one direction.”

Ward 23 Clr Paul Smit commented on a recent accident where a Glenanda Primary pupil was knocked over by a passing vehicle saying: “A traffic light was approved by the petitions committee four years ago, but JRA still has not erected a traffic light on Vorster Avenue.”

According to Smit, JRA claims there is no money for the approved traffic light yet JRA has erected a traffic light on Columbine Avenue in Mondeor and recently on Gordon Road, Kibler Park.

JRA was contacted for comment, however no response has been forthcoming at the time of going to print. The CHRONICLE will publish a follow up article when a response from the roads department has been received.
