Targeted: Vulnerable cyclists are being targeted by opportunistic criminals

Cyclists should not be targeted for their items although they become vulnerable to pitiless criminals

CYCLING has been described as a stress-free hobby and quick way to a healthy life.

Many cyclists ride before sunrise and after sunset and are often isolated because there are few people around during these times. This often leaves the cyclists at risk.

Real estate agent and cyclist, Trevor Sturgess said, “I love cycling. Most people accommodate cyclists but there’s always an idiot on the road to watch out for. It makes sense to always think about safety.”

Steven Hayward, the chairman of the Pedal Power Association, said depending on where and when a cyclist is riding, they may be vulnerable and become a target for criminals.

“A typical assault on a cyclist is either before sunrise and after sunset, or when cyclists are isolated and few other people are in the immediate area. Thugs will generally also choose a spot which provides limited escape options, where they can block your way and push your off your bicycle,” explained Hayward.

Safety precautions to keep in mind:

* Avoid strangers trying to stop or engage you.

* Avoid groups of people loitering on the street or spreading out in front of you. Pass wide if you can, and turn around if you are not feeling secure.

* If you are not riding from home, park your car in a safe place before starting your ride.

* Find out robbery and assault hot spots on your routes and avoid them. Cyclists are most vulnerable when unable to quickly turn around or take an alternate route.
