A legend of the South laid to rest

He travelled the world, won trophies and medals, and even became the first Mr Republic when South Africa became a republic.

COMMUNITY members of the South, family and relatives of legendary former bodybuilder, Dougie Baggott, came together to pay their last respects at his funeral service.

The service was held at the St Patricks Catholic Church in La Rochelle on Friday April 10, paving the way for beloved 84-year-old Dougie Baggott’s eternal rest.

Dougie grew up in Turffontein. As a youngster he fell in love with karate and also became a karate instructor. He later turned from teaching karate to lifting weights and body building as a young adult.

Dougie quickly received the recognition he deserved and went on to travel the world, collecting trophies and medals, winning Mr South Africa several times and becoming the first Mr Republic when South Africa became a republic.

Through his travels to different parts of the world, he became friends with people from different backgrounds and cultures, even maintaining long-lasting international friendships.

Dougie, who in his last years resided in Rosettenville, will be dearly missed by his son, daughter and grandchildren.

“I want to thank Virgin Active Health Club, Lance from Bassonia, Mario, Spiros and James from the Kenilworth Superspar, Piotto from Comaro, Kart and everybody else for their support and generous donations,” said Brenda Baggott, Dougie’s sister.

Dougie was known as a kind man who was friends with many and always carrying business cards with positive quotes. He lived by the motto: “Do it! Don’t say it” printed on his business cards.
