Looming project for the blind

The JSB staff that has been trained, came back to train the elderly visually impaired people how to knit.

THE Johannesburg Society for the Blind (JSB) was invited by the Department of Social Development to receive training for the loom knitting project.

Loom knitting is fun, easy and faster than knitting with needles. You can make scarves, hats, jerseys, socks, and others items. Knitting looms come in many sizes so you pick a loom depending on how wide you want your knitting to be. You can knit two colours at once, if the one yarn you use is not too thick.

The JSB staff that has been trained, came back to train the elderly visually impaired people how to knit. They decided to involve the elders, because they wanted them to be involved in this activity that has turned into a hobby.

Even the elders based in the frail care are also participating in this exciting activity. The elderly persons at JSB have perfected this skill and will be selling their items to the public.

This project is a fun way to help raise funds for the society as it is an NGO dependent on donor funding. JSB will be having a street sale on April 27 at 159 North Road Roseacre, and they are inviting the public to support the sale of items produced by blind people, including cane baskets and furniture.
