Rubbish continues to pile high

Last year SOJO Business and Tourism launched the clean-up of Klipriver Drive initiative. The initiative required careful strategic planning and stakeholder engagement from all spheres to ensure the clean-up became a sustainable and ongoing process.

JOHANNESBURG – A planned Joint Operation with the City of Johannesburg included Region F’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) department, which is made up of PIKITUP, Environmental Health, Social and Housing Departments, By-law Enforcement, City Parks and other necessary council departments.

The purpose of the clean-up was to obtain a sustainable solution to the ongoing lawless behaviour relating to illegal dumping and other activities along Klipriver Drive, by involving local communities, residents and businesses in the area that are directly affected.

The clean-up needed to send a strong and clear but positive message, which says that illegal dumping will no longer be tolerated, and that the communities take responsibility and accountability for their area.

It was discovered that residents living in City-owned apartments were not being serviced adequately by the authorities, and required sufficient refuse disposal means. PIKITUP, Social and Housing as well as Environmental Health offered to engage with the community on their education programme.

It is sad to note that five months later the area looks worse today.

SOJO invites all interested and affected parties to come on board with ideas. Contact SOJO on 011 493 7880, info@sojo.co.za or Nicky Vakaloudis (CEO of SOJO) on 082 481 8746.
