Fake cops apprehend woman on highway

A female motorist came face to face with suspected criminals pretending to be officers

THE blue light gang is still suspected to be operating on Johannesburg highways, after a young woman was forced off the M1 North by five men flashing blue lights on March 28.

Michelle Pelser of Mondeor SAPS Sector 2 CPF put out an urgent warning by the victim after the woman managed to escape harm.

“Young female was forced off the double decker highway M1 North Johannesburg at 20:53 by a Black Sedan with a blue cop light attached to the rear-view mirror. The white man had blue slacks and a navy V-neck jersey on. He demanded that the young woman step out and open her boot and he emptied her handbag of its contents,” Pelser said.

The victim requested official police identification, which was ignored by the man, who stated that a blue BMW was reported stolen. This alarmed her as she’s on all the CPF groups and their updates stated a blue Opel was stolen.

“He became verbally abusive and she saw four men in the black Sedan. She was petrified, and knew he was going to force her into the boot. By God’s grace she escaped around her vehicle and sped off. They followed her, but obviously couldn’t keep up,” added Pelser.

In another incident, reported on March 25 in Kwazulu-Natal, a similar method was used on another female motorist. A female motorist was stopped and her vehicle was searched without explanation by unidentified men, who also allegedly verbally abused her in full view of a traffic officer in uniform. The ‘traffic officer’ took her driver’s license and identity document and jotted down her information and gave it to the unknown men.

Pelser requested that people with information on the incident on the M1 come forward and urged female motorists to be extra cautious on the roads.
