Cameron Green celebrates his 90th birthday

Cam admits that he has been successful in almost all his undertakings as a businessman.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – A Reuven Complex Retirement Village resident, Mr Cameron Green, celebrated his 90th birthday on Tuesday March 17.

Cameron, better known as Cam or uncle Cam, was born in Ficksburg in 1925. He married his wife Thora 67 years ago and the caring couple is still going strong. They have two sons, Collin and Anthony, and two daughters, Cynthia and Brenda, and a total of 11 grandchildren. This close knit family enjoys an occasional get-together.

Cam admits that he has been successful in almost all his undertakings as a businessman, estate agent, auctioneer and owner of many race horses.

“As a politician, I was actively involved and stood against well known politicians; I also chaired many ratepayers and municipal associations for many years,” he said.

At the age of 25, Cam became the youngest secretary for a mining company in the Eastern Transvaal. He was later transferred to the Free State, where he later became involved in the commercial market.

The family moved to the North Western Johannesburg, where Cam started his own estate agency and later as a property auctioneer. Cam says his greatest achievement in the property market was when he auctioned and sold a total of 47 properties belonging to the City of Johannesburg in one day. “This unbelievable achievement was unheard of in property deals, during those days,” he recalls.

Jerry Theys, also from Reuven Complex Retirement Village, said Cam’s popularity, his commitment and hard work saw him chairing many community and ratepayers associations. He made great strides and brought about changes in the lives of many of his supporters and the communities he served.

Cam fondly remembers his many overseas trips, he travelled by boat and plane and visited many countries abroad. In 1984 he travelled to Canada to visit his brother and from there the couple spent a few weeks in the USA to visit friends and family.
