Women’s World Day of Prayer

A festive island feeling pervaded the chapel at the Women's World Day of prayer at Queenshaven retirement village as the women took part in a 85-year-old tradition.

ALBERTON- Every year on the first Friday in March, ladies gather all over South Africa and the rest of the world for the Women’s World Day of Prayer.

The ladies who gathered at Queenshaven retirement home in the peaceful chapel on Friday, is part of an 85-year-old tradition

A different country is selected to write the order of worship each year, and the Bahamas WDP Committee performed the task this year. The décor and dress reflected the island feeling as the leaders were dressed in bright colours. Each lay a handful of seashells at the decorated altar, and in the centre a lovely red lighthouse symbolised the islands.

The beautiful service marked with readings, praise songs and a time of meditation was followed by a delicious tea in the hall. The motto of the day was: “God’s power is unleashed when God’s people pray.”

The Women’s World Day of Prayer brings together people of various races, cultures and churches in fellowship and understanding. In South Africa the order of worship is translated into nine languages.

The WWDP relies on donations to continue its good work, and in 2014 they blessed various other organisations such as the Bible society and the Salvation Army with a R140 000 donation.
