Cable thieves strike again

Thieves repeatedly steal the cables, leaving residents in the dark for days.

TURFFONTEIN – It is almost an everyday occurrence to find live electric cables hanging in the South.

Thieves repeatedly steal the cables, leaving residents in the dark for days. Sue Davids, who lives in Park Road, Turffontein, has had these incidences for quite some time now.

“It is very difficult to live here. Almost every once a week, we are without electricity. Last week it was two nights and a day without one. These thieves climbed the tree at the corner of Park Road and Anderson Street, they pull the cables and we are then left without electricity. I feel sorry for City Power, because we phoned them every now and then to report this. Though they come and fix it, this happens every so often,” explained Sue.

The community around that area decided to get together and have meetings to pave a way forward. “Though only 12 families turned up for the first meeting, it is a starting point. We are tired of these thieves, we decided to get whistles and form some sort of neighbourhood watch. Hijackings is also rife. Similarly dumping in the area is unbearable, dustbins are also being stolen, especially for their wheels (trolleys for informal recyclers). We urged residents who live around these street to take part in these activities of combating crime,” she said.
