GDE condemns looting of shops by learners

The department appeal to learners to refrain from these illegal activities and respect their school uniform.

JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng Department of Education condemns the participation of learners in the looting of shops owned by foreign nationals in Soweto.

The looting and attacks follow the killing of a Soweto teenager by a foreign shop owner on Monday January 19.

The department appeal to learners to refrain from these illegal activities and respect their school uniform. The department is working with the districts and principals to ensure that all learners are in class during the contact time and continue with learning.

“There is no excuse for our learners to be seen roaming around the streets during and after contact hours in school uniform. I am calling on Cosas to mobilise against this thuggery and political backwardness. We should take lessons from the 2008, shameful xenophobic attacks that were directed at foreign nationals residing in our country,” said Panyaza MEC Lesufi.
