Premium experience at revamped Nu Metro Cinemas

Nu Metro cinemas now sport SceneVIP, where cinemagoers can relax in an upmarket lounge with a bar before enjoying their favourite movie.

EASTCLIFF – Nu Metro Cinemas took going to the movies to new high-tech altitudes with the launch of the refurbished extreme HD experience cinema at The Glen in Johannesburg on November 19.

The newly fitted screen technology RealD cinema screens and Auro 11.1 sound systems were demonstrated to the public November 20 with the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.

The Glen cinema complex now sports SceneVIP, where cinemagoers can relax in an upmarket lounge with a bar before enjoying their favourite movie. SceneVIP also provides movie goers with dining menu.

Nu Metro Cinemas Marketing Executive Nite-sh Matai said at the launch they did a complete refurbishment of the cinemas with the focus on advancing the technology.

The revamped cinemas now sport luxury reclining seats and precision white 3D screens, which Nu Metro boasted they’re the first and only in South Africa to use. The screen technology stretches from floor to ceiling about three stories high, this being the world’s most widely used digital 3D cinema technology.

“The ‘Xtreme’ attractions at The Glen, along with Nu Metro Menlyn in Pretoria, are the first cinemas in Africa to launch the first phase in Nu Metro’s SceneXtreme digital 3D offering. We’ll roll this out across the country in the next year, into existing and new sites,” explained Matai.

RealD’s managing director Bob Mayson said: “People like white screens because the light is bright and even, and white is neutral. In the past a lot of producers and directors have said that they don’t want their product in 2D shown on anything other than a white screen (as opposed to the current silver screens for 3D technology). PWS combines the best of both worlds. That means the organisers don’t have to keep on changing the screen and the creators are happy to show 3D or 2D movies on the same screen.”

The Auro 11.1 sound format powered by Barco is designed along three layers of sound, which are surround, height, and overhead. Thanks to its 11.1 configuration, the technology not only enables sound mixers to move objects around in space, but it also allows them to reproduce the immersive aspects of a film soundtrack in a way that is more compatible with their current workflow.
