Meals On Wheels sets a tough record

Volunteers started cooking just after 01:00 in the morning.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Meals on Wheels (MOW) have gone wild to set an impressive record of 10 598 meals served within 48 hours, between Wednesday November 19 and Thursday November 20.

Last year, on their first attempt, MOW attempted to serve at least 10 000, but could only serve an encouraging 7 700 meals, making this year’s record a very special one to the staff and volunteers who really worked hard to serve the less fortunate.

This years MOW’s Annual Cook-a-thon made project comprised 15 teams, with the first seven teams cooking on Wednesday and the other eight teams cooking on Thursday.

The team members volunteered from companies such as Standard Bank, The Document Warehouse, Rhodes Food Group, Premier Foods, Sing Project, and Group 5 Pipe. However, these companies are not the only corporate businesses who share the desire to help the less fortunate in Johannesburg.

Project Manager Michelle Wohlberg said: “There are many other sponsors, agencies, individuals and companies that help us with donations and support. In fact, the whole idea of this project was to give more and more companies awareness about those who do not get food everyday. If it was not for our sponsors, we would not be here, they are always ready to help.”

Project Manager Enrico Robinson added that the meals are served to a lot of less fortunate people in Johannesburg and that MOW takes great pride in serving learners in schools, because a learner that has not had a proper meal would be harder to educate that those who had.

“We as Montanus Primary School were very happy to see our grade ones and two’s taken to be the judges, because not only did they have fun, but they also learnt from an early age about feeding the less fortunate. We have a very good and valuable relationship with Meals on Wheels and we are proud of them,” said Montanus Primary School Principal Mr Khan.
