Robertsham Primary wins big in ‘Turns the Tables’

“It is crucial that at an early age learners realise that maths is an extremely important subject."

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Learners from Robertsham Primary walked away with six out of the seven top places in the CAMI 2014 Turning the Tables competition which took place on Saturday November 1 at Marist Brothers, Linmeyer.

Principal Sharon Lynch was delighted and proud of the learners, who have put in hours of practise to move from third place in 2013 to top spot in 2014.

“The objective of the competition is to encourage learners to improve their core mathematics skills. Since January we have conducted preliminary intra-school competitions at 24 private and public primary schools around Gauteng with the objective of encouraging learners to practice their core skills in preparation for the Inter-School Competition,” said Sharon Cross, CEO of The Foundation for Excellent Learning, the official distributor for CAMI.

Each of the participating schools entered a learner from each grade. Prizes were awarded for each grade based on the individual’s Performance Index (PI). The PI is a combination of speed and accuracy, the score being the number of correct sums completed per minute. Individual winners scored points for their school and the school with the most points overall won the CAMI Turning the Tables floating trophy. The highest score of the day was an amazing 88.4, achieved by grade 3 Robertsham Primary learner, Nikyle Pillay, who won the gold award in the Foundation Phase (grade 1 to 3).

Winner of the gold award in the Intermediate Phase (grade 4 to 7) was Rahul Rama-Panchia, grade 4 learner at Marist Brothers Linmeyer. Marist learners won one gold medal, four silver medals and one bronze medal to earn their school second place, with Maragon Private School taking third position.

The winners of the Foundation Phase and the Intermediate Phase each won a CAMI Maths Learning System, which contains the entire Maths curriculi for grade 1 to 12 and comes with a full support service of assessments, lesson plans and homework help line provided by The Foundation for Excellent Learning until the learners complete grade 12.

“It is crucial that at an early age learners realise that maths is an extremely important subject. Without a strong foundation, learners will find it difficult to achieve good marks for FET Mathematics for matric, which is a gateway subject to most degrees and careers. Learning maths with CAMI makes maths fun and develops a positive attitude towards this very important subject. Our mission is to equip all learners with excellent skills in mathematics, literacy, science and to build knowledge of how to learn, enabling all children to secure a future of their choice,” said Cross.
