Southerners relieved the power is back

City Power grappling to correct unplanned power outage in Johannesburg.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – A mother of a four-month-old was dismayed when she discovered there was no electricity yet again at 06:00 on November 4, and the baby’s bottles had not been prepared.

Even more residents in the South took to social media to vent their outrage about the unexpected power outage that happened two days in a row, after City Power had assured the country that there was no planned load shedding on November 3 and November 4.

Later on November 4, City Power confirmed that electricity had been restored to at least 90 per cent pf areas affected by the power outage.

Residential areas such as Glenvista, Mulbarton, Ormonde, Robertsham, Crown Gardens, Moffatview, Doornfontein among others were affected by the power outage and all areas had their power restored on November 4.

On November 3 the electricity went off at 18:00 only returning at about 22:30. On November 4 the power is said to have gone off again at 05:30.

According to SAPA the outages were due to a technical fault at a transformer at the Prospect substation near City Deep, resulting in an unplanned outage.

“The substation is one of the three bulk intake stations in the city. It feeds several smaller substations that were affected by the interruption of supply in the north-eastern and southern suburbs of Johannesburg,” said SAPA.

Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said in a statement there had been no reported outages linked to the collapse of the Majuba power station’s coal storage silo on Sunday.
