Where have the blood donors gone?

Decline has had a huge impact on the available blood supply

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – The South African National Blood Service relies heavily on the public who meets the requirements of being blood donors to ensure that there is always an adequate blood supply available for patients in need of transfusions.

The Southdale Donor Centre has seen a decline in the number of donors in recent months, and this has had a huge impact on the available blood stock.

“As we approach the festive season, we know that this will continue to drop and we are therefore sending out the plea to all those who are eligible to come to Southdale Donor Centre in the Southdale Shopping Centre, Eastwing Entrance, on the corner of Alamein and Landsborough roads, Southdale to donate blood,” said Kamantha Pillay.

To become a blood donor you need to be: between the ages of 16 and 65; weigh more than 50kg; be in good health; consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient and lead a sexually safe lifestyle.

Those wishing to donate are encouraged to contact Southdale Donor Centre on 011 433 8418, which is open on Mondays between 13:00 and 16:30; between 08:30 and 16:30 on Tuesdays, Thursday and Fridays; between 08:30 and 18:00 on Wednesday and between 08:30 and 13:00 on Saturdays.
