ATM scammers caught

The suspects stole and cloned people's bank cards

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – PDL Security, with the help of the Booysens police and community members, who worked undercover, helped put an end to ATM scammers at the Turffontein Kwikspar.

Three suspects, who looked very innocent, well dressed and presentable, were caught on Tuesday morning outside the store at Tramway Street.

The three men were found in possession of bank cards and were driving a rented VW Polo, with a false registration number.

They had been terrorising residents and scamming them out of their earnings with their charming looks and polite manners.

The store asked PDL Security to help protect people and combat this crime in the Standard Bank, FNB, ABSA and Nedbank ATMs outside.

“These men stole and cloned people’s bank cards and then stole their money. They are convincing, one of them was trying to persuade me that he had nothing to do with this as we raided them. We want people to know that we want to stop these crimes the same way we did with this one.

“The community must continue helping to combat this criminal behaviour, because it hurts a lot of innocent and hardworking people,” said Pieter de Lange, Operations and Investigations Director of PDL Security.

Booysens SAPS Communications and Warrant Officer Lorraine van Emmerik said: “The case is been investigated and will hopefully be linked to more cases in the surrounding areas.”

FNB and Standard Bank ATMs at Viva Supermarket, Mentz Street, were bombed by six men and an undisclosed amount of money was taken on Thursday October 23. Another ATM was bombed on Tuesday night in Rosettenville.

These ATM crimes frighten people of Johannesburg, ANC Cllr Radebe said: “These criminals are community members. Residents should report any suspicious activity within the community and also participate in structures that fight crime in their localities.”
