Newmarket Racecourse is now Makro

Newmarket Racecourse was situated within the hub of busy Alberton, it was instantly recognisable, lending the town a bright, vibrant and well known landmark.

ROSETTENVILLE – The signboard at the corner of Verona and Prairie Streets, Rosettenville is outdated because the obsolete Alberton Newmarket Racecourse is now Makro.

It was demolished for the new shopping centre. Newmarket Racecourse was founded as a midweek racing club in 1938, night racing commenced on September 26 in 1996.

Newmarket Racecourse was situated within the hub of busy Alberton, it was instantly recognisable, lending the town a bright, vibrant and well known landmark.

With its straight of six furlongs and a long run-in of a half mile, Newmarket could not be considered an easy course, but was nonetheless less severe than a track like Turffontein Racecourse.
