Services at this church can improve public life

Helping: “This area is getting worse; we want to do our part.”

LA ROCHELLE – Pastor Aguedo da Cunha of Portuguese Evangelical Church, The House of the Nation in La Rochelle, wants his church to uplift the community and especially the children.

There are other projects that the church offers to the public: every weekday about 120 children are given bread, tea or juice; on Saturdays children are taught to draw, colouring and other life skills. There’s a school of music where interested individuals are taught vocal technique and musical instruments, and also a gym where members of the public can keep fit.

“Though people from the church volunteer their services to help the community, people outside the church donate and help us continue with our services. To feed the children weekly we need up to R1 000. Johny’s Bakery in Booysens has been providing us with scones and other services for more than 10 years now,” explained Pastor Da Cunha.

The services at the church which is 38 years old are presented in three languages; English, Portuguese and French.

To empower the youth, Pastor Da Cuhna said they will have the informative department where other skills can be honed. “We need retired teachers with expertise in websites, TV, studios and cameras, to come and impart their knowledge to this community. Our community has been under siege with crime and drugs,” he said.

Portuguese Evangelical Church, The House of the Nation, is situated at 40 3rd Street, La Rochelle and the Pastor can be contacted at 082 957 1471.
