Getting your tekkies on for a good cause

Five sectors you can choose from

Alberton/Johannesburg – National Tekkie Tax was celebrated on May 30 and Michelene Toms was announced as the Disability Ambassador for the Tekkie Tax project 2014 in April this year.

Michelene is a single mom with four children and two foster children. In addition to this huge task, she is a property investor and runs a very successful student accommodation business.

Michelene stated that “South Africa had a great need for a fundraising campaign like Tekkie Tax, that includes the whole spectrum of welfare organisations, from animals, basic family care, children, disability to education. There are so many fundraising campaigns where the money never reaches the welfare organisations on ground level. With Tekkie Tax, I have the assurance that the money really does reach ground level. To be one of the ambassadors for Tekkie Tax is my way of giving thanks to God for all the wonderful blessings that He has bestowed upon me. It is an honour to work with such a dedicated and devoted organisation and extraordinary people like Annelise de Jager and her staff at the Tekkie Tax office.”

Michelene chose the disability sector because of her love and compassion for people with a disability: “I want my donation to count and with Tekkie Tax I am sure that my financial contribution is actually reaching the NGOs it’s intended for.”

Her birthday was celebrated on April 8 at a NGO. “I will never forget my birthday party at Aanhouwen. A young girl asked me if she could dance for me, it was her gift to me for my birthday. She is in a wheelchair, deaf and without the ability to speak. She mouthed the words of a beautiful song and danced with her arms in her face. I was overwhelmed and thinking back to it now, it brings tears to my eyes. This was truly the greatest moment of my time as the disability ambassador.”

National Tekkie Tax Day is a fundraising project for a variety of carefully selected welfare organisations, schools and institutions in South Africa. Depending on where your heart lies, you can choose any of the five sectors you would like to support when buying your sticker/s (and you may choose more than one).
