Caxton Reynolds Race: Cake eating challenge at Kenilworth

Round five of the Caxton Reynolds Race took place at the Kenilworth Spar where teams took part in the cake-eating challenge.

KENILWORTH – “Let them eat cake” is the traditional translation of the French phrase Qu’ils mangent de la brioche, supposedly spoken by “a great princess” Marie Antoinette, many years ago upon learning that the labourers had no bread.

On Saturday, July 5, although bread was readily available, all the contestants of the Caxton Reynolds Race 2014 had their cakes and ate them too.

The contestants had to ice and decorate two cakes, a round chocolate and vanilla cake, to earn their points in a race to win a trip to Zanzibar.

Upon completing the decorating task the contestants had to quickly eat one of the cakes in a race to win a R500 shopping voucher from Kenilworth Spar in Joburg South.

This was a surprise, and let’s just say at the end of the cake eating competition most of the contestants left on a sugar high.

The event took place at Kenilworth Spar in Joburg South in the morning. Team Bedfordview/EdenvaleNews and Joburg East Express won both challenges, which earned them a shopping voucher from Spar and the highest points for this leg of the race.

Kenilworth Spar shared the remaining cakes with their loyal customers on the day after the race was completed.

The winners of this year’s race will win an all-expenses-paid trip to Zanzibar, sponsored by SA Reynolds Travel Centre in Springs.

Their next challenge will take place in Benoni, at Benoni Market Spar, on Saturday, July 12.
