JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Police stopped a truck with suspected cable theft worth about R5mil in Booysens area on Sunday June 8.

It is said the driver was unable to explain how he came into possession of the cables, and was subsequently arrested. He was taken to Booysens Police Station.

City Power officials were also on the scene with SAPS. On Friday June 6, part of Joburg South was without electricity because of the cables being stolen from Lenasia.

According to City Power, the power interruption was caused by the theft of panels supporting the 88kV electricity pylons between the Nirvana and Nancefield substations.

Kaya Fm news stated: The truck was escorted by a white Mercedes with heavy armed men, when they were stopped they tried to offer the JMPD a R15 000 bribe however the police didn’t budge. When cornered (white Mercedes) they sped off leaving the driver of the truck alone.
