GLENVISTA – It’s alleged they had followed a cash-in-transit vehicle to the shopping centre, which was supposedly collecting cash from Checkers.
Shots were fired and in the process a resident who was shopping in Checkers was shot in the leg. He received treatment on the scene and was taken to Netcare Union Hospital in Alberton, where he was reported as being stable.
The robbers were in a brown double cab bakkie and another possible vehicle. As they fled the scene they hijacked a black Toyota Tazz (TMZ103GP). The woman driver was released moments later on Biggarsberg Drive.
Glenvista Community Forum (GCF) patrollers were first on the scene and witnessed the hijacking, pursuing the suspects out of the area towards Rossettenville.
Many of the Checkers staff were in a state of shock and GCF victim support unit counselled the affected staff as well as shoppers.
“I’d like to thank GCF, D&D and Mondeor SAPS for their speedy response. I was in Woolworths upstairs from Checkers when the shots were fired and one of the Woolworths male staff acted remarkably quickly and dropped the security shutters to keep us shoppers safe,” said a shopper.
“This is ridiculous! The amount of times I’ve been in Checkers at this time is crazy! I honestly am starting to feel scared for my life and my family. My thoughts are with all those affected,” said a resident.
