House robbery in Mondeor

A robbery took place at a home in Elmwood Road, Mondeor on Wednesday May 21 at about 12:30, after a suspect, acting as a meter reader, asked the domestic worker to open the front gate so he could come in and read the meter.

MONDEOR –  When she came out, he put a gun to her head and escorted her back into the house where she was tied up. Another suspect arrived at the house and together they opened the safe, taking a firearm, jewellery, eye pads and cell phones.

“I tell my domestic worker every day not to open up for anyone they don’t know. I don’t know what made her come out and open the gate. She knows better than this,” said the upset homeowner.

“I was at work when I received a call from a friend who had come to drop my two children off at home. When my daughter ran to the front door and realised something was wrong she ran back to my friend’s car and he investigated further. He called my husband and I to tell us what had happened and we came rushing home. I was so worried about my children,” said the distraught woman.

Gauteng Flying Squad arrived not long after and local security company vehicles were soon on the scene. Mondeor SAPS and investigating officers were also called to the house.

A case has been opened and investigations are being made into the robbery.

Sector Two’s Community Policing Forum’s, Michelle Pelser was called to the scene, organising trauma counselling for the family.

“We advise all homeowners to send their domestic staff, including gardeners to attend Domestic Watch meetings, which are held at various places in the South on a monthly basis. The meetings are very informative and the lessons are written by Penny Steyn, with Martin Barber from SOS the presenter. The cost is only R30 per lesson and we provide a bus service to make sure all the domestics arrive and leave safely,” said Michelle. For more information on Domestic Watch meetings phone Michelle 084 292 9144.
