Don’t ‘black-out’ the future of SA

The day young people find their true voice; South Africa will finally be rid of racial discrimination.

Whether many would like to admit it or not, the ANC’s election campaign relied heavily on labelling the official opposition as a ‘racist’ party. Most of the supporters believe that to be the truth, with claims of the DA favouring white people where the party is in government.

While on statistical value that may be true, has anyone ever thought of white people as South Africans? Just because their group was ‘previously advantaged’ does not mean they should become a ‘currently disadvantaged’ society.

Whether a black or white person suddenly find themselves unemployed after a number of years having enjoyed the freedom of having a job, the truth is they both do not have an income. They both face the pressures of feeding their children and paying off bills.

Same with potholes, if a white or black man drives on a road where there is a pothole and as a result the tyre of his vehicle gets damaged. The problem is not who is white and who is black, the problem is the pothole.

In the first example, the problem is also not of colour but of unemployment. Instead of listening to racial attacks on political parties, we need to start listening to what is on offer and what is delivered to all South Africans.

The reality of providing services to all South Africans is that white people also stand a chance to enjoy opportunities offered to them. The problem we have is not that the Western Cape government is giving preference to white people; the problem is unemployed.

Stating that 85 percent of the jobs given in the Western Cape went to white people is ignoring a large percentage of South Africans who remain unemployed.

Although redress is necessary in South Africa, how we go about it is even more important. Two things need to happen; stop preaching delivery and start doing it and stop blaming apartheid and start giving solutions.

Let us not contaminate the future of South Africa; and let us not undo the great work done in 20 years to move South Africans forward by pulling the race card out each time challenges are raised.
