Malema’s seat confirmed in parliament

With over a quarter of the votes already counted, Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) leader Julius Malema has a seat confirmed in parliament.

JOHANNESBURG – First time contesters in the elections, EFF, currently have approximately four candidates whose seats in parliament are confirmed.

According to Wiekus Kotze, a member of the EFF in Alberton, “We are still going to go up considerably considering there is still a long way to go before the final result is released.”

Kotze based his view on the fact that most stronghold areas have not yet been counted. He says, “With less than 10 per cent already been counted, we already accumulated more votes than the DA.”

Despite the hype around the African National Congress (ANC) showing less than 50 per cent popularity before the elections, Kotze believes the ANC is going to have a much higher percentage of the vote than anticipated.

“The provinces where we currently have most of the challenge are the Western Cape, Kwazulu-Natal and the Northern Cape,” he said.

Counting at certain voting districts in Alberton ended at 06:40 on Thursday morning, May 8.

With just over 30 per cent of the votes counted, the ANC currently leads the national votes by at least 58.7 percent, followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) on 27.7 per cent. The EFF currently has 4.2 per cent.
