Police clamp down on sex workers

Four women were arrested by Mondeor SAPS for sexual offenses and for allegedly living from the proceeds of immorality.

MAYFIELD PARK – On Wednesday February 26 in Gazelle Road, Mayfield Park, four women were arrested by Mondeor SAPS for sexual offenses and for allegedly living from the proceeds of immorality.

The women were aged between 21 to 30 years old.

“It’s about time these women have been arrested. For the past few years they’ve operated along Swartkoppies and Main Road between Kliprivier Drive and Peggy Vera Road, Kibler Park. Sitting suggestively, it’s been an embarrassment in front of my children when I take them to school and back,” a Kibler Park mother said.

Another resident said, “Well done Mondeor SAPS. I also saw some other women were arrested a few weeks back for the same crime.”

While these women have been arrested young women in Bouquet Street and surrounding areas in Rosettenville, stand at the corners of the streets daily and men regularly stop in expensive vehicles to pick them up.

The CHRONICLE tried to speak to one of the teenagers in Bouquet Street last week but she refused to give comment, only shaking her head and then telling the reporter to go away.

According to a resident in Verona Street, he said the teenagers won’t talk because they fear their employer. “They hang around all day picking up men. I feel sorry for some for them because they don’t know how else to earn money. I know many of them take drugs and then they need to prostitute themselves to earn more money for more drugs. It’s a vicious circle,” he said. The man refused to give his name, saying he is scared of some people in the area. “There’s bad men live near here and I wouldn’t like them to know me.”
