Choir boy makes his mark in digital music

JOBURG – Growing up in Khuma, Klerksdorp, Diketso Maine a.k.a Juvinale Dee, started his musical journey as a member of the choir at the Jon Wesley Church, where his grandfather was a pastor.

Today he is a regular on the DJ circuit having performed with some of the biggest names in the industry. He has also worked for several record labels producing both his own and other artists’ music.

“Music was never just a hobby for me,” says Maine “it is a passion.”

He explains that it was actually his brother who recognised his patience and his love for music and who suggested that he look into the Digital Music Composition and Production Course offered by Boston City Campus& Business College in association with Soul Candi Institute of Music.

“The course helped me a lot in terms of producing better quality music. It also highlighted the opportunities such as registering my own record label, the importance of copyrighting music and how to publish my own music online,” he says.

The Digital Music Composition and Production Course were developed by the legendary Ryan Murgatroyd who is the one half of SA music sensation a.k.a Crazy White Boy. The course is the only one of its kind in Africa and seamlessly integrates modern music composition with all the latest music production techniques.

The advantage of the course is that candidates do not have to be able to read musical notation – it offers an alternative to those who want to work in sound and music but do not necessarily want to write music or play in a band. It was actually Murgatroyd who spotted Maine’s talent while he was studying at Soul Candi Institute of Music. After completing the course, Maine has worked throughout the music industry including at Kudoskelem Records and Soul Candi Institute of Music.

Maine is currently passing his knowledge and passion onto another generation of music lovers in his capacity as lecturer for the Soul Candi Digital Music Composition and Production Course at Boston City Campus & Business College.

He encourages his students by telling them that if they love, dream and have a passion for music then the Digital Music Composition and Production Course is the right place for them to be.

“This course covers everything from music production and composition to mixing and mastering and even piano lessons. And the great thing is that you don’t need to have a musical background to register,” comments Maine.

He adds however, that one needs to have patience, work hard, trust one’s self while following the right channels in order to succeed.
