Cansa launches Shavathon 2014

To launch the Shavathon 2014, the first person was sprayed and the first person was shaved for the year.

JOHANNESBURG – The CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) Governor, Manny de Freitas, officially launched the 2014 CANSA Shavathon at the Head Office of Mamba Strike Force Security company who sponsored the launch.

A CANSA certificate of thanks was handed to Mamba Operations Director Kevin Norman and Marketing Head Dominique Munro. Mamba Managing Director Jonathan Hendricks and Finance Director Jenny O’Connor were also thanked.

In his address De Freitas explained that CANSA is blessed to have the number of dedicated volunteers that it has. These volunteers, whom De Freitas described as “unsung heroes”, give tirelessly to the cause of cancer. “This is visibly evident during the Shavathon,” said De Freitas.

He provided statistics that pertain to the Shavathon, which included that more than 60 000 tins of colour spray and more than 1 600 hair clippers will be used and that more than 300 shopping centre venues in South Africa will host CANSA Shavathon events on March 1. Over and above that more than 400 workplaces and corporates will participate in the Shavathon.

New initiatives have been introduced, such as the online Shavathon introduced last year. “Although only 25 people participated online in 2013, collectively they raised an incredible R81 502. We hope to expand on this in 2014,” explained De Freitas

Manny de Freitas said that the funds raised will go to the services CANSA provides, which include supporting 7 493 cancer patients through 110 support groups and 2 950 trained care and support volunteers.
