Dream comes true for Frances Vorwerg learner

Every two years Glenanda Primary School makes a dream come true for a child who is unable to walk without aid.

GLENANDA – This year Monja Kruger (12), from Frances Vorwerg, was the fortunate learner whose wish came true!

Monja has cerebral palsy and has great difficulty in walking. For the past few years she’s had a walking frame but as she grew so her frame became bigger and she always needed a buddy to help her carry her school bags. “Monja kept coming to me saying, ‘I’m always falling down,’ but never without a smile and she was never one to complain,” said Mrs E Myburgh, from Frances Vorwerg. “We’ve always had a special link with Glenanda Primary School and this is a very special occasion in deed,” she added.

Every two years Glenanda Primary School’s grade three learners hold a cake and candy sale as their outreach programme and two years ago the school donated a wheelchair to one of the children from Frances Vorwerg. This year the wheelchair was to go to Monja.

The grade three children from 2013 held a very successful cake and candy sale last year, with all the learners going all out to make, bake and sell as much as they could so they could raise enough money to purchase a wheelchair. Tyron Leisher, Julian Silva and the rest of the grade three learners, were determined that enough money would be made.

At assembly on Thursday February 6, grade one, two, three and four learners sat excitedly in the school hall. Monja was guest of honour but had no idea about the surprise waiting for her.

Mr G King, principal of Glenanda Primary, had the honour of handing over the wheelchair to Monja. “It gives us great pleasure to present this wheelchair to you. I’m very proud of our 2013 grade three learners who made this possible,” he said.

After assembly was over, an overjoyed Monja had the chance to try out the wheelchair. As she raced around the school’s garden, with a big smile on her face, her teachers and Glenanda Primary School staff looked on with delight.
