Woman 103 years old victimised by Joburg City

Why does Joburg City victimise seniors?

CROWN GARDENS – Maud Milne, who is 103 years old, and lives in Crown Gardens, has been asked by Joburg City to cough up money owed to them for rates and services.
Maud is being forced by the City to sign a five-year contract to pay off her debt of R7 765.38. “This is absolutely preposterous and Joburg City should be ashamed of itself. We only have about six seniors in the South who are over 100 years old and I think if, and whatever they owe the City, should be written off,” said an angry Clr Paul Smit (Ward 23).
Maud receives a government pension each month of about R1 200, and she still lives in her own home. “It’s quite disgusting that seniors, especially those who have reached a grand age of being over 100, have barely no assistance from the City. We should be cherishing our elderly, not forcing them to pay for what little services they receive. Most of them really can’t afford to pay,” Clr Smit added.
According to another senior citizen, “Some of our seniors have to eat dog food to supplement their groceries. The government pension goes no where. It’s pathetic,” she said.
Apparently Joburg City refused to write-off her account and say Maud must pay! “By signing a five year contract she’ll be 109 years old when it’s up, if by the grace of God she lives that long.
“Enough is enough and Joburg City must stop victimising Maud,” concluded Clr Smit.
