Attempted theft leaves Joburg in the dark

Parts of Bassonia, Oakdene, La Rochelle, Turffontein, Rosettenville and South Hills have been left without power.

JOHANNESBURG – After an attempted theft at Wemmer Pan sub-station in the early hours of Tuesday morning January 28, the sub-station blew up with a section being burnt down.

According to a news report, certain areas could be without power for two to three days.

The Glen Shopping Centre was without electricity from 07:00 until 11:00 and many businesses in and around The Glen havealso  been affected.

St Mary’s Children’s Home didn’t have electricity for the whole of the morning and has had interrupted power since.

“We are very worried about this. We aren’t a normal household where takeaways can be bought for supper and we have 56 children to think of feeding tonight,” said Sonja Harmse, director of St Mary’s.

The CHRONICLE has tried to contact City Power with no luck, but will keep on trying to obtain updated information.
