ABSA Southgate donates wheelchairs to GPAPD

The two recipients of wheelchairs have been on the waiting list for the past six years at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, according to GPAPD.

ORMONDE – Gauteng Provincial Association for Persons with Disabilities (GPAPD) received two wheelchairs on behalf of the disabled community people from ABSA Southgate branch on Thursday January 16.

The two recipients of wheelchairs have been on the waiting list for the past six years at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, according to GPAPD.

This branch has done a lot for GPAPD in the past years. “Among other things ABSA Southgate branch has given us food parcels, clothes and they really support our Casual Day. You are way too modest and what you have done for GPAPD in the last year is wonderful and very generous. Without major companies like ABSA assisting NPO’s like GPAPD, our lives would be much more difficult. The passion and commitment shown by ABSA Southgate is wonderful, especially Jennifer Rehman, the branch manager. I appreciate your commitment and dedication and wish the world was full of wonderful people like you,” said Shane Browne, GPAPD fundraising and marketing manager.

Jennifer Rehman also appreciated the opportunity given by GPAPD to help the community. “At ABSA, it is part of all staff performance development to be part of the Corporate Social Initiative (CSI), and at Southgate Mall we have decided to work with Shane and his team. The wheelchairs are a small token from the branch and we wish that this year we will be able to give more than two. We have also given food and clothes. The management and staff of the branch are very passionate about giving back to the community and will try to do much more this year,” explained Jennifer.

GPAPD works with area social workers and Department of Social Welfare to identify a needy community. It is said that eight per cent of South African population is disabled, and with almost 12 million people in Gauteng, there are almost 960 000 people who need help.

Rudi Govender, GPAPD social manager, and Shane said they do not turn away anybody for help irrespective of who they were. “We help disabled people who are not working and don’t have medical aid.
