A rundown of school uniform prices

With most schools opening their doors to pupils this week, it’s not only the children who are nervous.

JOHANNESBURG – Many parents have to perform some creative accounting to afford the cost of school uniforms, sports’ kits, textbooks, bags, stationery and school fees, which all start adding up into high numbers.

On average, a primary school pupil will set their parents back between R100 and R250, and that is just for a uniform. Add in shoes, jerseys and blazers, suitcases/bags and the cost rises.

Depending on the high school a pupil attends, the cost of their uniform will vary between R1 500 and R3 000, depending on the school, which grade the pupil is in and what sports and extra mural activities they participate in.

And that is just the start; don’t forget sports trips and tours, sports uniforms and bags as well as all the other extras that just keep adding up when your child is at school.

It’s no wonder families are becoming smaller and smaller and having one child per household is becoming commonplace. So we, with help from Pep stores, have decided to help out anxious parents by giving a rundown on the costs of uniforms for your primary and high school children.
