Christmas Toy Run gaining momentum

Touching the lives of little ones one teddy bear at a time is Miss Junior Teen Kristen Martins, who is using her title to bring smiles to children in hospital.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – What started as a goodwill deed to make a little boy’s day special, because he was booked to spend Christmas Day in hospital, has turned into a Christmas Toy Run that has received an overwhelming number of donations from good Samaritans.

Miss Junior Teen South Africa, Kristen Martins from the south of Johannesburg, was invited recently to Mike’ Kitchen in Alberton where she not only received a generous donation of a variety of brand new toys and other children’s entertainment material, but was also treated to a special evening with musical entertainment.

Welcoming drinks were served and guests were welcomed by MC Grant Laidlaw, who also introduced the special guests, including Kristen’s mother and number one supporter, Veronique Martins, The Scottish Piping Society of the Witwatersrand, Mike’s Kitchen representatives and other friends and members who assisted.

The entertainment of the evening was provided by the Scottish Society. They took to the floor for a tear-jerking performance that was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.

The Piping group, a non-profit organisation, was founded in 1946, and reportedly exists to celebrate and grow the music of the Great Highland Bagpipe in South Africa. In particular, The Society is said to promote the performance, tuition and appreciation of Piobaireached, the classical form of bagpipe music.

“The Society organises and hosts competitive solo contests, recitals and social playing events through the year,” said Grant Laidlaw in his welcoming introduction. “We hope this donation helps Kristen reach her goal of 3000 toys for the children in hospital this Christmas.”

A large number of toys were handed over to Miss Junior Teen SA by the little children of The Fellowship of the Thistle ZA.

Kristen and Veronique Martins gave a big thank you to owner of Mike’s Kitchen at Alberton Crossing, Tommy, his staff, The Fellowship of the Thistle ZA and The Scottish piping Society of the Witwatersrand, as well as everyone who contributed to the donation.
