Making a difference to the lives of our elders

REUVEN – We were approached by the committee of the Reuven Senior Complex to help get some relief for the seniors of their high rentals and we proceeded to meet the City Council – put our cards on the table and discovered there were many more needs than just getting a rent reduction!

Seniors flats were in a disgusting condition, geysers a huge problem where many seniors did not have warm water during the winter; stoves were faulty, taken out to be repaired, and never replaced; water pouring out of the overflow; this causes seniors to use more of their little pension that was already stretched to its limit! Gardens neglected, buildings now becoming very much in need of a total clean up!

We started working on four flats; giving it a coat of paint inside, helping to try to get products that the seniors were in need of, and trying to make a difference to our seniors!

Then got involved in getting local garden service, Paradise Gardens, which joined us in wanting to make a difference, and cleaning the outside pavements of the home and so many of the seniors were so very happy that their pavements were much cleaner. We would appreciate it if people could help us to work on the security of the home!

Cornwall Hill College made a difference to Reuven senior complex; cleaning gardens and painting the flats, what a wonderful group of young people caring for our seniors in the South of Johannesburg.
