Christmas wreath making for garden club

Creativity at your fingertips!

MULBARTON: Johannesburg South Garden Club members had a wonderful Saturday morning meeting on November 9, at the home of Rob and Leonarda Jones, where they learnt how to make a Christmas wreath at the workshop.

Rob advised the members what they needed to bring to the meeting but for those who had forgotten there was plenty of natural decorations, including seed pods, conifers, ribbons and baubles.

“Willow branches are ideal to make the wreath ring. Strip the branches of their leaves and bend in a circular motion intertwining the branch, add many more to make the wreath thicker and stronger.

“When you have your willow wreath, decide on the colour you’d like to keep to and attach the natural décor and baubles with wire. Make a satin ribbon bow for the bottom of the wreath and a bow for the top with a loop for hanging the finished wreath,” said Rob.

All the members who attended the workshop got stuck in and made a wreath to take home. The wreaths each looked different as some chose traditional Christmas colours, green, red and gold while other members went for lilacs, silvers and white, or turquoise, silver and blue. At the end of the meeting refreshments were served and members admired each other’s wreaths.

“It was a delightful morning and we realised just how creative we could be with little effort and not too much expense,” said Fathima Badat (chair of the garden club).
