Visit to Reuven Old Age Complex yields positives

With the help of Sue Lubbe and Friends, residents of Reuven Old Age Complex can now smile.

REUVEN – Sue Lubbe and Friends once more made sure residents of Reuven Old Age Complex are taken care of during trying times.

On Tuesday September 3, the residents contacted Sue Lubbe to come and meet with them to see if she could assist with getting the increases on the flats reduced. The board have tried to get a reduction as the seniors were already not coping financially. “We also committed to help upgrade and clean the home for the seniors that are basically dependant on the State to provide them with accommodation in which to spend their final days, in these complexes and homes, as many do not have families, and the ones that do have families often do not see their children anymore! It is not an ideal situation for the seniors in our country, where they are left to be lonely, without sufficient funding and most of all, many of them feel as if they no longer have their dignity as it gets taken away when you become dependent on the State!” explained Sue Lubbe.

That’s when they set out to do their work. On Saturday September 21, Sue Lubbe and Friends board members assisted and paid for two gardeners to cut the lawns, do some edges and basically clean up. According to Sue Lubbe it really made a huge difference!

“Then on Monday September 23, prior to Heritage day with the help of Cornwall Hill College we also had four flats getting a first coat of paint on the walls; something I am sure has not been done in many years! The other groups did weeding and cleaning up the grass growing over the paving; it was just so much fun for them. The seniors in turn had such admiration for the young people that are without doubt future leaders of our country! Working with so much passion!” she said.

Sue Lubbe also added, “The children were amazing! Our friends from Infoprop Real Estates made boerewors rolls to feed them and supplied them with soft drinks, causing a nice braai atmosphere and the young adults loved it. Then we had Del Forno that did pizzas for the seniors and the young learners had an absolutely wonderful time! Their team was awesome! Thank you guys it was truly wonderful for the learners to give something to the seniors and you in turn gave to them and the seniors something that our seniors generally cannot afford to have at all – so called luxuries.

“Then a special thanks to Caroline and her board members and volunteers that did the cooking, but let’s not forget our seniors! They were so happy to have received a meal and lots of extra goodies like cakes, puddings, fruit and vegetables that were donated by Woolworths, you guys are the best! Without donations from the Woolworths group many a home for the seniors, for babies, children and dysfunctional families etc. would not be able to have regular food on their tables! Well done Woollies!”
