In a recent interview with Dr Mande Scheepmaker, a homeopath from Alberton, the significance of the use of plants for medicinal purposes was discussed in general. Many plants contain active ingredients which can been used to treat medical conditions. In the preparation of plant extracts, either parts of the plant or the whole plant is used.
The plant is chopped and macerated, separated into its constituents by soaking, usually using an alcoholic base. She continued, “It is not usually safe to just use plants because with homeopathy, it differs.” Dr Mande Scheepmaker had spoken on the topic of using medicinal plants for cancer treatment and suggested:
“First of all, one needs to understand where the research is coming from. Not all cancers are the same and not all cancers progress the same in different people. The research studies are often conducted on animals, in vitroor isolated tumour cells.
“Medicinal plants may have a place within a treatment regime for cancer, rather than it being the treatment for cancer –
