Theft cases rank the highest in the South

Between April 2012 and March 2013, Moffatview police station has recorded the highest number of theft cases, followed by burglary, at residential premises.

JOHANNESBURG – According Brigadier Anton du Bruyn of Johannesburg Central Police station, “The stats suggest Moffatview is likely to become one of the busier police stations in Johannesburg.”

Considering the station has only being in operation for a year, over a thousand cases of theft have been reported at the station.

Although national statistics indicated more murder and sexual crime cases were recorded, Moffatview statistics appear to be low, compared to other crimes in the area. Besides theft, burglary at residential premises and theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle are other cases reported most often in the area.

The stats from Johannesburg have prompted Dr Gulam Karim to appeal for more community involvement, he said, “Johannesburg communities need to look out for one another. The public needs to take action when they see crime being committed.”

With Gauteng being the third highest contributor of crime statistics in the country, a lot still has to be done in addressing crime issues. However, the work of the police in partnership with the community has yielded certain a level success in fighting crime.
