Revisit yesteryear glory at Ellis Park Museum

Rugby fraternity will be able to visit Ellis Park Museum and call up some distinctive memories of yesteryear.

JOHANNESBURG – Ellis Park unveiled their impressive museum on Tuesday October 1 to mark the beginning of many visitors entering the facility. The museum boasts an array collector’s item, rugby memorabilia which includes both national and international collections such as Springbok blazers as well as those of the other rugby playing nations and art.

The principal collector was Swys Joubert, who played for several provinces in South Africa such as Transvaal, Western Province and Northern Transvaal. The collection consists of an incredible and precious artefacts and mementos.

Artefacts on display include one of the oldest Springbok blazers. The blazer dates back to 1903. Several original rugby paintings and a 1906 ball, autographed by that year’s Springbok team.  From women’s rugby and rugby league to a detailed layout of rugby jerseys from the past century.

The museum also has on display items in the likes of scrumcaps, boots, flags ties, blazers from all around the globe and a pictorial history of the original form of the game.

The museum has been planned and structured to attract both international and local tourist. It has been set up by the Golden Lions Rugby Union together with Swys Joubert, who collected these memorabilia over many years.

The museum is housed at the entrance of the Ellis Park Stadium and not to be missed by frantic rugby supporters.
