Gauteng police cracking down on criminals

The progress of Crime Lines #DrugWatch tip-off programme in fighting crime successfully has prompted a call from President Jacob Zuma for the expansion of Drug Watch to other provinces.

COLLECTIVE effort between members of the public and law enforcement in Gauteng has seen a number of criminals involved in drug peddling also in other crimes, either accounting for their behaviour in court or already serving time.

The progress of Crime Lines #DrugWatch tip-off programme in fighting crime successfully has prompted a call from President Jacob Zuma for the expansion of Drug Watch to other provinces.

Crime Line reported that two men arrested in connection with several rounds of ammunition and an R5 rifle stolen from an accident scene involving a police vehicle south of Johannesburg, which were recovered in their possession, appeared in court on September 16.
Thanks to a tip-off, these men were also linked to a general dealer store in Meyerton where packets of CAT with a street value of R5 000 were found.

“We are learning a lot as Drug Watch grows and have been communicating with a number of vital role-players. The idea is not only to enforce, but also to connect communities with organisations that can help with the rehabilitation and reintegration of drug addicts, while also offering counselling to families,” said Head of Crime Line, Yusuf Abramjee.

Drug Watch released a progress report stating that they have reached a 23 000 arrest mark and have seized about R13-million worth of illegal drugs since it was launched in Gauteng June.

On September 9 in Bassonia, two suspects aged 25 and 31 were arrested for being in possession of drugs including cocaine, CAT and rock valued at R6 000, by members of the Johannesburg Flying Squad (RR).
